Tattoos By
Dizzy
Dennis “Dizzy” Doan was raised in the Vietnamese community of Linda Vista in
San Diego, California. His artistic
abilities were foreseen as a child. As years passed, he quickly transformed his crayon scribbles
on paper to masterpieces on human skin. His first piece of ink was a tattoo of his country of
Vietnam on his left arm (which was self-done with a
self-crafted tattoo machine). The piece shows his love, appreciation, and dedication for his
heritage and family background. That first experience under the needle changed his life
forever. tattoo shops san diego are hard

At the age of
19, Dizzy’s skills were discovered by tattoo artists and shop owners Willis Thweatt and
Christopher Ackerman of Dragon Lance Tattoo. Now, Dizzy has been slingin’ ink for a dense four
years and currently working at Bound To The Needle Tattoo Studio with Willis Thweatt in
University Heights of San Diego, California. Dizzy’s tattoo style is
heavily focused on Black & Grey Asian, Chicano, and Calligraphic art. His
unique approach and masterful shading techniques has established him as one of the premier tattoo
artists in the city of San Diego. He is the
youngest registered tattoo artist in the city, and his skills prove him
worthy. tattoo shops san diego, tattoo shops san diego, tattoo shops san diego, tattoo

When did you make the jump from working an every day job to becoming a tattoo
artist?
From the age of 13, I would have various random freelance jobs. I did
everything from fixing car windows to cutting hair. Obviously the pay wasn’t good or dependable. I was
always interested in tattooing, but I never did it for money. I had too much love for the art as a
hobby. One day I got an apprenticeship offer at Dragon Lance Tattoo. I was real
hesitant about the opportunity, but the bosses took good care of me. I
currently work and go to school at San DiegoStateUniversity full time. I’m
working on my Bachelor’s degree in art to further progress my art skills and knowledge.

How many tattoos have you personally done on
yourself?
I’ve tattooed
every part of my body that I could possibly reach, believe it or not.The only parts I haven’t done myself are my back and right
arm. I have every Asian mythical beast you can possibly think
of; from guardian foo dogs to Chinese dragons. I don’t regret
any of them no matter what the appearance. I believe that’s
what it takes to be a good tattooist. You have to know the
pain you are inflicting on your clients to truly understand. You wouldn’t trust a tattooist that is afraid of a needle. san

What sort of tattoo training have you
had?
I taught myself
how to tattoo. However,
my knowledge of the tattoo business, sanitation and procedures is credited towards Willis Thweatt and
Christopher Ackerman of Dragon Lance Tattoo (now Bound To The Needle Tattoo Studio).

Has your family been supportive about your tattooing
career?
Vietnamese
people still fail to see tattooing as an art form.It is still
considered taboo to the majority of the Vietnamese population. There
are very few tattoo studios in the country ofVietnam. My
family is slowly starting to accept the fact that I do this as a living. But everything takes time.Believe it or not, no
member of my family has ever seen my whole tattooed body.It saves a
lot of drama from goin’ down. Ha ha.
